Activities and Resources

At Harbury Pre-School, there are a variety of different resources and activities on offer. These are planned and changed weekly, based on the children's individual learning and development needs as well as their own interests and ideas.

Harbury Pre-School are fortunate to have a secure outdoor area. Outdoors the children can enjoy a variety of ride on vehicles, a sandpit, a playhouse and quiet area where they can sit and read a story. In the summer, the children enjoy using the climbing frame and slide. All children take part in our 'Physical Challenge' where they get to try stilts, balancing on the beams, perfecting their ball skills and testing their climbing abilities.

Role Play

The role play corner is always a firm favourite, particularly the traditional home corner where children can use the play oven, kitchen utensils and play food. The theme of the role play area changes frequently and in the past children have enjoyed shoe shops, book shops, Doctor's surgeries, vets, fire stations, builder's work shops, cafes, baby clinics, photography studios, fairy tale dress up and wherever else the children's imaginations take them.

Exploratory Play

Children love to get messy! We involve the children in making our play dough. The advantage of making our own is the ability to add food colouring and glitter! In the winter, children explore ice in a tray and observe how it changes to water. During Chinese New Year, the children love to explore the noodles, both wet and dry. Corn flour and shaving foam are also firm favourites with some of our children.

Creative area

Children can self resource the drawing table, paints and collage materials and we have seen some fabulous and unique creations. Adult-led activities based on the children's interests have included puppet making, kite making, Chinese watercolour painting using chopsticks and creating habitats for the dinosaurs!

Cultural Celebrations

At Harbury, we aim to extend children's learning and awareness of different cultures and ways of life. We celebrate Chinese New Year by painting representations of Chinese Dragons, turning our role play area into a Chinese kitchen with dressing up clothes, making our own Chinese Stir Fry and eating it with chopsticks and taking part in a Chinese Dragon Dance complete with music and instruments whilst parading with our very own handmade 'Chinese Dragon'.

At Diwali, children have the opportunity to dress up in Indian costume, create their very own Diva Lamps out of clay and produce some beautiful Rangoli patterns.

We have strong links with Harbury Church who regularly visit the Pre-School to talk to the children about the Easter and Christmas stories.

We regularly take the opportunity to take the children out and about to extend their learning. We regularly visit the Library where children have the opportunity to listen to a story and choose their own books to loot at. Every year, the children go out for an Autumn walk to observe the changing colours in the woods, collect conkers and listen to the sound around them. Back at the setting, they then use what they have collected to produce beautiful autumn collages. Other visits in the village have included bug hunts, a visit to the Dairy Farm and use of the local landscape to re-enact stories, for example. 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt'. Every year, children and parents are invited to a 'summer outing'. Previous visits have included Stratford Butterfly Farm, Hatton Country World and Den Building at Brandon Marsh.

Christmas is always a special time of year at Harbury Pre-School. The children dress up and take part in a traditional Nativity in front of their parents and carers. This is historically held in a real stable outdoors courtesy of Bud Jackson. As part of this, the children learn the Makaton signs to Silent Night to perform as part of the Nativity to their parents/carers.

On the last day of term, Father Christmas comes to visit. Parents and carers are invited to listen to their children sing Christmas songs and all children receive a little Christmas gift.
